Anno 1980
Kam-Yin's timeline

1980
Kam Yin had started as an eatery at Prins Hendrikkade 56 in 1980. At the time, this was the troubled head of Amsterdam's Zeedijk. A no-go area for a long time. Nevertheless, Kam Yin had dared to establish itself here The name ‘Kam Yin’ means golden swallow and comes from the names of the owners; a Surinamese Chinese couple with a great passion for cooking. As Surinamese Chinese, or Surinese, we are now a household name in Amsterdam and the surrounding area.

1990
The rezoning of the building that housed the original Kam Yin forced us to move to the current location. It was barely 65 metres away, but a big challenge full of uncertainties. We have since been here for 35 years! Kam Yin on Warmoesstraat 6 was not as big then as it is now. It was a busy little restaurant. The situation as it was then was very nicely described by Arnon Grunberg in his debut novel Blue Mondays

1993
Kam Yin's first expansion: the current takeaway counter at Warmoesstraat 6.

1994
Kam Yin's second extension: the current oriental hall. With this expansion, we could finally accommodate more guests.

2004
Kam Yin starts in Amsterdam Zuidoost

2007
With the latest expansion, Kam Yin now occupies the corner of Warmoesstraat and Nieuwe Brugsteeg. This is what Kam Yin looks like today.

ADOPTIE BIRAMBI BOOM
To support ARTIS, we have adopted a tropical tree called Birambi tree since 2018. Its fruit is used in Surinamese cuisine to make chutneys with make. Also visit our tree when you are at ARTIS! The tree can be found in the butterfly garden to the left near the entrance.

2021
During the latest refurbishment, we gave the interior a fresh look. Each room has its own theme that reflects our identity
